Investment and Trust by Carey Smith

³Jesus answered, ŒIf you want to be perfect, go, sell your possessions and give to the poor, and you will have treasure in heaven. Then come, follow me.¹ When the young man heard this, he went away sad, because he had great wealth.² Matthew 19:21-22

There are so many lessons that we can learn from this story. The rich young ruler wants eternal life and he knows he can get it from Jesus. But Jesus asks something very difficult of the man and the man is unable to give it.

I have worked in the financial industry for many years and one thing I have learned is that when people go to a financial advisor, they are in essence saying to the person, ³I believe you can do a better job than I can.² Why can the Advisor do a better job? Is it their experience or knowledge? Whatever the reason, when you invest with them, you are trusting them to do a better job than you.

How are you with Jesus? Have you trusted Him with your life or just the burden of your sin? The rich young ruler may never have understood what he was missing. Jesus was asking for his life, not a token of his appreciation to receive Jesus¹ eternal gift. Jesus knows he can manage our lives better than we can.

I admit that I daily need to trust and believe Jesus is a better manager than I am. He can manage my child, my marriage, my job, and certainly my finances better than I can. Recently, or in the near future, some of us will be receiving monetary stimulus packages from the government. I wonder what would happen if we decided to turn that over to Jesus and let Him manage it. Just a thought.
